Learn how to maximize your square foot garden by increasing its growing space 6.5 to 8 times! The structure that will be built is called a “Pflanzen Hüse” or “Plant Shanty”. This growing structure is a good demonstration of several permaculture principles, most notably: stacked functions. This live build with lecture breaks will show you how to create a near year-round growing structure that utilizes thermal mass and stores its own water.

Burnt Truths About Biochar with Live Fire. 5-8pm, July 14.
Location: 908 W Maxwell ave, Spokane Wa 99201 (parking in alley)
Join Daniel Bruce from Bruce-Ruhl Design for a live fire demonstration and lecture on the uses and creation of biochar. The live fire will demonstrate three different small scale methods for making biochar in densly populated areas. The lecture will cover topics such as best uses for soil, why there is the difference in data sets and stories about experience, other uses of biochar separate from cultivation and why people that know about buochar talk about its potential. Join Margaret Ruhl from Bruce-Ruhl Design as she shares her technique of how to make high quality, local sourced, all-organic dirt. This an important class for any person practicing sustainability who has had moral conflict with purchasing growing mediums or soil amendments. Class discussion will include types of material to use, how to source materials, why this is not composting (although compost is used), and why, ethically, we need to make our own dirt, plus more!

The Hills Have… Eggcrates? 8am-noon, July 28.
Join Margaret Ruhl from Bruce-Ruhl Design in learning how to build drought resistant low/no water growing spaces. Topics covered will include the basics of how hugelkulture works, why this method is not the same as composting and real life experiences with microhugel in urban neighborhoods. In the last part of the workshop participants will get the opportunity to construct one of these growing spaces for the community sourcing from local materials.

Four Part Day Workshop: 8 am-7pm $15 per Part/ $50 All Day
This four part, day long workshop will cover these topics: Intro to site design, pallet compost bin build, Madgepadge worm factory, and live fire biochar can kiln demo. Over the course of the day persons will be introduced to some basic fundementals of a permaculture site design on the grounds of a common urban backyard. This segment is to setup for the up and coming “permaculture site design and build” workshop course. The next two parts demonstrate how to build intrical components to any gardenscape for free out of commonely found “waste products.” The day will conclude with a live fire biochar demonstration #3: the tuna can kiln. A MUST ATTEND for anybody interested in permaculture design. Join B-RDI&PLLC designers in this multi-part course to see applied what is learned in a permaculture design course. Participants in this workshop will not only get to see the application of permaculture design methods but also the opportunity to construct the design once complete. Throughout the course of the workshop series participants will learn, hands-on, about the permaculture principles applied, something not very often offered in this area.
